About Dr. Smith
Fred W. Smith, DMD, MD, JD, is originally from Portland, Oregon, though his varied career has led him to live and practice all over the country. He has been practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery for over 10 years, and he is very happy to be living and working in Alexandria with his family. Coming from a family of doctors, helping people has always been important to Dr. Smith. Oral surgery has given him an opportunity to help people improve their oral health and their overall health.
Education
Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Occidental College in 1988, after which he was part of a research team at Children’s Hospital of LA studying retinal cancer. He then decided to continue his education by earning his law degree (JD) from the University of Oregon. As a lawyer, he fiercely advocated for the rights of his clients, and he carried that passion for helping people over into his medical career. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Oregon Health & Sciences University, where he graduated cum laude, followed by a general surgery internship at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle.
Residency
He was drawn to the precise techniques involved in oral surgery and completed a five-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program at the University of Louisville in 2006. His residency training gave him hands-on experience with the full scope of oral surgery, and he has been practicing ever since. His combined medical and surgical background allow him to treat patients in the most accurate and effective manner possible.
Hobbies
Outside of work, Dr. Smith enjoys fishing, hunting, skiing, playing the banjo, and spending time with his family.
